March 9, 2009: Week 5
Congratulations to Week 4 winner Steven Dexheimer for a very creative script entry that leaves future writers a ton of avenues to explore.

With the conclusion to Steven’s pages, the Cowrite screenplay is really starting to feel like its own unique story. The key now is to continue developing Jonas’ character while sending him (and the audience) on an unforgettable journey.

Per Michael Hauge’s suggestions from last week you should still consider implementing a “ticking clock” to establish a sense of urgency and really focus on Jonas and defining his character as the story progresses. How is he going to react to the unexpected events and developments unfolding before him in his own unique way? Give him really tough decisions to make each step of the way. That goes for all the characters. Jonas is already on an interesting adventure and the story will only be more compelling and marketable if he is a truly memorable movie character.

Some old and new questions to be answered either in the next ten pages or later are: Where is Ava? Is she alive? Dead? What about Walters? Was that him that checked into the hospital? Where is he now and what does he want? Who were the men in dark suits at the high school and what do they want? How does Helen and her computer Julian fit into all this? What’s Cable’s next move going to be? And most importantly, what complications are going to arise to prevent Jonas from achieving his goals and spur the story forward in new directions?

As you go about your next ten pages you should also be thinking about both the end of Act 2 and the end of the screenplay. Where are you envisioning this story going and how are you going to get there?

As always feel free to consider these suggestions or ignore them completely. The best submission will win out regardless.

Good luck!
