June 3, 2009: Drama at its core
I listened to an interesting Philip Roth interview recently in which he confirmed that what he needs to write is “Person X in jam Y” and that fiction at its most fundamental is about trouble and it better be bad trouble in order to be interesting.
I thought that was a great, concise definition of drama and a good compliment to the Aaron Sorkin quote, “Drama is basically about one thing: Somebody wants something, and something or someone is standing in the way of him getting it.”
This is why we are at such a compelling part of the Cowrite script. Jonas is in a helluva a jam, there’s a ton at stake, and Cable is standing in his way.
